Signature Moments

The Drive — 1986 AFC Championship

January 11, 1987·vs vs Cleveland Browns

Down 20-13 with 5:32 left, starting from his own 2-yard line, Elway drove the Broncos 98 yards to tie the game. He converted multiple third downs, hit crucial passes, and scored the tying touchdown with 37 seconds left. The Broncos won in overtime. It's simply called "The Drive."

Ninety-eight yards. Five minutes. In the AFC Championship. The Drive is the most famous quarterback performance in football history — and it doesn't even have a real name because it doesn't need one.

The Helicopter — Super Bowl XXXII

January 25, 1998·vs vs Green Bay Packers

In Super Bowl XXXII, Elway ran for a first down on a crucial third-and-6. Two Packers defenders hit him simultaneously and his body spun like a helicopter in the air. He landed, got up, and pumped his fist. The Broncos won their first Super Bowl and Elway finally got his ring after 15 years.

The helicopter play. At 37 years old, he threw his body into two defenders to get a first down in the Super Bowl. That's John Elway — talent plus toughness plus 15 years of frustration.

Back-to-Back Super Bowls — Going Out on Top

January 31, 1999·vs vs Atlanta Falcons

Elway won his second consecutive Super Bowl in his final game, throwing for 336 yards and winning MVP. He retired as a champion, ending 15 years of playoff heartbreak with back-to-back titles. He walked away on his own terms, at the very top.

He lost three Super Bowls. Everyone said he couldn't win the big one. Then he won two in a row and retired. The most satisfying ending in football history.
