The Story

Defining Moments

The Shot Over LeBron

Game 3 of the 2017 NBA Finals. Durant pulled up over LeBron James — the best defender on the planet in that moment — and buried a cold-blooded three-pointer to essentially seal the series. It was the shot of a 7-footer with a guard's handle and a sniper's nerve.

The 2014 MVP Speech

"You the real MVP." Durant's emotional tribute to his mother during his 2014 MVP acceptance speech became an instant cultural moment. It was raw, genuine, and revealed the human behind the 7-foot scoring machine. The phrase entered the lexicon permanently.

The Legacy

The Purest Scorer

At 6'10" with a 7'5" wingspan, handles like a guard, and a silky-smooth jumper from anywhere on the court, Durant is perhaps the most unstoppable scorer the game has ever produced. Four scoring titles. Two Finals MVPs. His combination of size and skill is a cheat code that no defensive scheme has ever solved.

Character & Personality

Hooper at Heart

Despite being a billionaire superstar, KD's favorite thing is still just playing pickup basketball. He shows up at random parks and Pro-Am leagues. He responds to fans on social media. He's a basketball purist who happens to be one of the most gifted to ever do it.

The Whispers

The Burner Accounts

In 2017, Durant appeared to accidentally defend himself from a burner Twitter account, sparking one of the great social media mysteries in sports. Durant eventually admitted to using alternate accounts, calling it "a mistake." The internet, naturally, has never let it go — and honestly? It made him more relatable.

High School2003–2006

The 6'9" Guard from PG County

Montrose Christian / Oak Hill Academy · Rockville, MD / Mouth of Wilson, VA

Grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland. Attended three high schools, finishing at Oak Hill Academy. Named a McDonald's All-American and the number two recruit in the class of 2006 behind Greg Oden. At 6'9" with guard skills, his frame defied positional classification — a preview of the positionless revolution to come.

The Slim Reaper — Scoring Machine

OKC Thunder / Golden State Warriors / Brooklyn Nets / Phoenix Suns · OKC / San Francisco / Brooklyn / Phoenix

Selected 2nd overall in 2007 by Seattle (relocated to OKC). Won four scoring titles with the Thunder and reached the 2012 Finals. Made the controversial move to Golden State in 2016, won back-to-back championships (2017, 2018) and Finals MVPs. Suffered an Achilles tear in the 2019 Finals, rehabbed and continued elite play with Brooklyn and Phoenix. One of the purest scorers in basketball history.

Signature Moments

35 Straight Points to Beat the Spurs

May 12, 2016·vs San Antonio Spurs

In a pivotal Game 6 of the 2016 Western Conference Semifinals, KD scored 37 points including a string where he personally outscored the Spurs over a stretch to force a Game 7. His scoring stretches defied defensive strategy.

A reminder that when KD decides to score, there is literally no defensive scheme that can stop him.

The Dagger — 2017 Finals Game 3

June 7, 2017·vs Cleveland Cavaliers

With the game tied in the final minute of Game 3 of the 2017 Finals, Durant pulled up for a three-pointer over LeBron James and buried it. The shot gave the Warriors an insurmountable 3-0 lead. KD's first ring was inevitable from that moment.

The shot that justified the most controversial free-agency decision in NBA history.

Back-to-Back Finals MVPs

June 8, 2018·vs Cleveland Cavaliers

KD won his second consecutive Finals MVP, averaging 28.8 PPG, 10.8 RPG, and 7.5 APG in the 2018 sweep of Cleveland. His all-around play was transcendent — he wasn't just scoring, he was facilitating and defending at an elite level.

Proved the Warriors weren't just Curry's team. Durant was the closer.

The 2014 MVP Speech — "You the Real MVP"

May 6, 2014·vs N/A

Durant won his first (and only) regular-season MVP and delivered an emotional speech thanking his mother, Wanda Pratt. "You made us believe. You kept us off the street. You the real MVP." The room was in tears. The phrase became a cultural phenomenon.

One of the most genuine, emotional moments in sports award history. It humanized one of the most talented players alive.

Game 5 vs Bucks — 49 Points, Every Single One

June 17, 2021·vs vs Milwaukee Bucks

With Kyrie Irving injured and James Harden hobbled, Durant played all 48 minutes and scored 49 points in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semis. He nearly won the series single-handedly — his foot was on the three-point line on what would have been the game-winning shot. Inches from the greatest individual playoff game ever.

He played every minute. Scored 49. Nearly won it alone. His toe was on the line. The Nets lost the series, but Durant proved he might be the most gifted scorer who ever lived.
