The Story

Defining Moments

The Jab

Holmes possessed the greatest jab in heavyweight history. He used it to dominate the division for seven years, making 20 consecutive title defenses. His technical mastery was often overlooked because he had the misfortune of following Muhammad Ali — an impossible act to follow.

Signature Moments

The Best Jab in Boxing History

1978-1988·vs vs Heavyweight Division

Holmes had the greatest jab in boxing history — a snapping, stiff, piston-like punch that kept opponents at range and set up his devastating right hand. He defended the heavyweight title 20 times, going 48-0 before losing to Michael Spinks.

Twenty title defenses with the best jab anyone had ever seen. Holmes was technically perfect and utterly dominant.

Living in Ali's Shadow

1978-1985·vs N/A

Holmes had the misfortune of following Muhammad Ali as heavyweight champion. No matter what he accomplished, the public compared him to Ali — and found him wanting. He beat Ali in 1980, which made people hate him more. Holmes was great but never loved.

He was one of the greatest heavyweights ever and nobody appreciated it because he wasn't Ali. Larry Holmes was the most underrated champion in boxing history.
