Signature Moments

The 1994 Finals — So Close

June 1994·vs vs Houston Rockets

With Jordan retired, Ewing led the Knicks to the 1994 NBA Finals. He averaged 18.9/12.4/2.0 blocks in the series. Game 7 came down to the final seconds — John Starks went cold, and the Rockets won. Ewing never got closer to a championship.

He waited his entire career for Jordan to leave. When Jordan finally did, Ewing got to Game 7 of the Finals — and lost. The most heartbreaking near-miss in Knicks history.

The Frozen Envelope — 1985 NBA Draft

June 18, 1985·vs vs N/A

The NBA held its first draft lottery in 1985. The Knicks, with the worst record, got the first pick — which conspiracy theorists attributed to a "frozen envelope" that commissioner David Stern could feel. Ewing went number one to New York and became the franchise for 15 years.

The most famous conspiracy theory in NBA history. Whether the envelope was frozen or not, Ewing became the face of the Knicks for a generation.

The Finger Wag — 1990s Knicks Wars

1990s·vs vs Multiple Teams

Ewing was the anchor of the 1990s Knicks — the toughest, most physical team in basketball. He battled Jordan, Hakeem, Shaq, and everyone else in an era when centers dominated. His finger wag after blocking shots became iconic in New York.

The 90s Knicks were built around Ewing's toughness. He blocked your shot and let you know about it. Madison Square Garden hasn't been the same since.
