The Story

Defining Moments

49-0

Marciano retired with a perfect 49-0 record — the only undefeated heavyweight champion in boxing history (at the time of retirement). He knocked out 43 of his 49 opponents. His relentless, come-forward style overwhelmed opponents who had no answer for his stamina and iron will.

Character & Personality

The Brockton Blockbuster

At 5'10" and 185 pounds, Marciano was undersized for a heavyweight. He compensated with work rate, chin, and a right hand called "Suzy Q" that knocked out legends. His conditioning was so superior that he simply wore down bigger men until they collapsed.

Signature Moments

Retiring Undefeated

1955-09-21·vs Archie Moore

Marciano knocked out the legendary Archie Moore in round 9 to retain his heavyweight title for the sixth time, then walked away from boxing at 49-0. No heavyweight champion has retired undefeated since.

The perfect ending to the perfect record. Still unmatched in heavyweight history.

49-0 — The Perfect Record

1947-1955·vs vs Heavyweight Division

Marciano retired 49-0 with 43 knockouts. He is the only heavyweight champion to retire without a loss. He wasn't the biggest or the most skilled — he was the toughest, the most relentless, and the hardest punching pound-for-pound fighter of his era.

Forty-nine wins. Zero losses. The only undefeated heavyweight champion in history. Rocky Marciano proved that toughness beats talent.

KO of Joe Louis — Ending an Era

October 26, 1951·vs vs Joe Louis

Marciano knocked out the aging Joe Louis in the 8th round. Louis, the greatest heavyweight champion of all time, was fighting to pay tax debts. Marciano cried after the fight. He'd just beaten his childhood hero — and he knew Louis should never have been in the ring.

He knocked out his hero and cried. Rocky Marciano respected the sport enough to feel pain when he won.
