Signature Moments

The Original "Captain Comeback"

1969-1979·vs vs Multiple Teams

Staubach led 23 fourth-quarter comebacks in his career — earning the nickname "Captain Comeback" before the phrase was overused. He was a Heisman winner, a Navy veteran, and the most clutch quarterback of the 1970s. He didn't start his NFL career until 27 because of military service.

He served his country in Vietnam before becoming the best quarterback in football. Captain America played quarterback for America's Team.

The Hail Mary — Inventing the Term

December 28, 1975·vs vs Minnesota Vikings

Staubach threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Drew Pearson with 24 seconds left to beat the Vikings in the 1975 playoffs. After the game, he said, "I closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary." The phrase entered the football lexicon permanently. Every desperation throw since is called a Hail Mary because of this play.

He invented the Hail Mary. The actual phrase. Every time a quarterback heaves a prayer, they're quoting Roger Staubach from 1975.
