The Story

Defining Moments

The Hitman

Hearns possessed the most devastating right hand in welterweight history. His first-round knockout of Roberto Durán and his epic war with Marvin Hagler are among boxing's greatest moments. At 6'1" with a 78-inch reach, he was a physical anomaly at welterweight — a middleweight-sized fighter with welterweight speed.

Signature Moments

The War with Hagler — Round 1

April 15, 1985·vs vs Marvin Hagler

Hearns and Hagler fought the most savage first round in boxing history. Both men threw everything they had. Hearns cut Hagler badly but Hagler kept coming. By the third round, Hearns was knocked out cold. Three rounds of pure violence that defined an era.

The first round against Hagler is the most violent three minutes in boxing history. Hearns came to fight and met a man who couldn't be broken.

The Hitman — First Four-Division Champion

1980-1991·vs vs Multiple Weight Classes

Hearns became the first boxer in history to win world titles in four weight divisions. At 6'1" with an 78-inch reach, his right hand was the most devastating one-punch weapon in boxing. They called him The Hitman for a reason.

The first four-division champion in history. His right hand was a weapon of mass destruction — one of the hardest single punches in boxing history.

The Leonard Fight — 14th Round TKO

September 16, 1981·vs vs Sugar Ray Leonard

Hearns was winning on points and dominating with his jab and reach when Leonard found the knockout in the 14th round. It was a war of styles — Hearns' precision against Leonard's heart. The fight is considered one of the greatest in boxing history.

He was winning. He was dominating. Then Leonard found the shot. The Leonard-Hearns fight is in every "greatest fights ever" list for a reason.
