The Story

Defining Moments

The Huntington Beach Bad Boy

Ortiz was one of the UFC's first true villains — and the promotion thrived because of it. His gravedigger celebration, his trash talk, and his five consecutive light heavyweight title defenses helped build the UFC from a niche product into a mainstream sport. Love him or hate him, you watched him.

Signature Moments

The Gravedigger — UFC's First Villain

2000-2003·vs vs Light Heavyweight Division

Ortiz won the light heavyweight title and defended it 5 times while doing his signature "gravedigger" celebration — pretending to dig a grave for his fallen opponents. He was the UFC's first true heel, selling pay-per-views through trash talk and bravado.

He dug a grave for his opponents after every win. Tito Ortiz was the first fighter who understood that selling fights was as important as winning them.

The Rivalry with Liddell — MMA's First Mega-Feud

2004-2006·vs vs Chuck Liddell

Ortiz and Liddell fought three times in the UFC's first true rivalry. Their feud drove pay-per-view numbers to new heights. Ortiz lost two of three but the rivalry put both men — and the UFC — on the mainstream map.

The feud with Liddell was the rivalry that proved MMA could sell like boxing. Two men who genuinely disliked each other, fighting for real. America tuned in.
