Greatest Rivalries

Nunes vs Shevchenko: The Two Queens of Women's MMA

See Amanda Nunes's profile

The two most dominant women's fighters of the modern era, separated by a weight class and two razor-thin decisions.

Head-to-Head

Head-to-head: Nunes 2, Shevchenko 0. UFC 196: Nunes UD (close). UFC 215: Nunes split decision (extremely close — many scored it for Shevchenko).

Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko are the two greatest women's fighters in UFC history. Nunes dominated bantamweight and featherweight. Shevchenko dominated flyweight. They fought twice at bantamweight — Shevchenko's non-natural weight class — and both fights were close.

Defining Moments

UFC 196 (March 2016)Nunes won a clear unanimous decision but Shevchenko proved she belonged at bantamweight.
UFC 215 (September 2017)Split decision for Nunes. Widely disputed. Shevchenko dropped to flyweight and never fought Nunes again.
Both become dominant championsNunes defended the bantamweight title 5 times. Shevchenko defended the flyweight title 7 times. Both built GOAT-tier resumes in separate divisions.

Turning Point

UFC 215 split decision. Many observers (including media scorecards) thought Shevchenko won the fight. The controversial decision prevented a trilogy and left the rivalry without a definitive conclusion.

The Verdict

Nunes holds the 2-0 head-to-head edge, but both fights were at bantamweight (Shevchenko's non-natural weight). The rivalry is unresolved — a trilogy at 125 would have told us everything. Both retired as top-2 women's fighters ever.

Nunes vs Shevchenko represents the road not taken in women's MMA. A trilogy at a catchweight or at flyweight would have been the biggest women's fight in UFC history. It never happened.
